Amazon on Campus

August 26, 2014

School is back in session across the country with millions of college students arriving on campuses, some for the first time. Students are attending classes, professors are preparing syllabi, and campuses are filling up with all kinds of activities.

There is, however, one new partner on campus that has recently arrived: Amazon.

Striking partnership deals with institutions such as Purdue University and UC-Davis, Amazon is expanding operations into the business of college textbooks. With prices frequently topping $200 per textbook, the potential for both Amazon and the universities is very high. What strikes many observers as interesting are some of the following points:

Revenue and cost-savings will be shared by both partners
Students receive reduced text prices
Amazon is muscling out, or beginning to, incumbents such as Barnes and Noble
