Budget Mondays

February 17, 2014

Monday – 2/17/2014

It’s Monday – a painful day for most people, yours truly included. Sometimes it is made even more painful as we remember just how much money we ended up spending over the weekend.

It’s one word that can make people cringe, angry and sad all at the same time, a rare occurrence indeed. There are plenty of reasons for this – people are told at work that their budgets are being cut, their ideas cannot be funded because they are not in the budget, and in our personal life, our budgets don’t usually quite match up to our desires.

As the snow, ice, and cold weather continue unabated across large areas of the country, many people are (not unreasonably) thinking about warmer weather, beach season, and taking vacations. While it might seem a long way into the future, the warm weather and vacation season that so many people are looking forward to is right around the corner. Vacations are something that everyone looks forward to, but a lack of practical planning can lead to a very budget- unfriendly vacation. They do not have to be that way, however, so let’s look at few ways to make vacations fun, enjoyable, and budget friendly.

1) Use social media to find great deals
2) Book flights early (like right now) to save money
3) Use coupons
4) Take advantage of less-traveled times of the week (Tues-Thurs) for better pricing
5) Stay in a place with kitchen – cooking a few meals during the trip could save serious bucks
6) Skip the 5-star hotel. You are on vacation for the sights, not the hotel room.
